Due to increasing industry demand and to further strengthen its position in the advanced nondestructive testing market, Control Union Industrial Inspections (CUII) recently had its phased array bolt inspection procedure approved by DNV-GL and the DNV-GL service supplier approval extended for phased array inspections.
Together with CUII’s sister company, International Testing Solutions (ITS) in Dordrecht-NL, special scanning tools have been designed and 3D printed in our own R&D facility. This has resulted in the development of the ScalaStud® guiding mechanism tools, which enable smooth and consistent scanning of any bolt or stud, such as marine risers, crane slewing bolts, wind turbine foundation bolts. The ScalaStud® tool can be used on any studs or pins in machinery or equipment used in the offshore and petrochemical industry and many other industrial applications.
Phased array inspection may be performed without any paint removal and done while the bolt or stud is still in situ (no requirement for removal). The ScalaStud® tools reduce inspection time (and costs involved) on site, as our phased array inspectors are able to inspect over 100 bolts per day. It therefore limits the impact on both budget and operations, and has many other benefits over conventional non destructive testing.
The development of the ScalaStud® and DNV-GL approval further confirms CUII and ITS’ aim to develop tailor made inspection tools with use of advanced NDT. This to reduce the cost and impact of clients’ third party inspections.
